Using Shortcuts in Save As dialogues

I seem to remember that in Windows 2000 it was possible to use shortcuts
within the "Save As" dialogue box as a means of opening a folder in which to
save a file. Typically I used the shortcuts I had saved on my Desktop as a
means of navigation. In XP if I click on the shortcut, instead of opening the
folder the system now prompts me for a filename that is the shortcut itself
replacing the name of the file I was expecting to save. Is there a solution
to this ?

It should work as you described for W2k. It's possible an association
is messed up. Try the fixes for .LNK, Directory, and Folder:

Thanks but if the shortcuts behave "normally" in other contexts i.e. if I
click on the same shortcut on my Desktop it will open the appropriate folder
window why should there be a problem here ? It also seems that these
shortcuts only become available in an Office "Save As" dialogue box, those
for "pure" XP applications such as Notepad don't even give you the option to
choose anything other than a "pure" folder.
