Upgrade to XPHome?

Rosie

My wife has inherited an Evesham system running 98SE which is on a
'recovery' disk. Is it possible to use this disc as the confirmation of
an existing version of a Windows operating system for the purpose of an
upgrade to XPHome?
Thanks.?

Hi Rosie,

Generally not with Recovery disks. They are in an image format that is not
recognizable by the Upgrade CD. If it is a generic OEM reinstall disk, then
the answer would be yes. Insert the disk and take a look at it. If you see a
normal \Win98 folder and other tools, then it's a generic reinstall disk.

Hello Rick.
It looks like an OEM reinstall disk as it has 3 Preload folders, then a
Windows 98 folder which (from memory) looks like the 'usual' one.
Does that sound good enough for me to buy an upgrade version?
Many thanks.

Hi Rosie,

A regular OEM generic disk will have the following on the root:

\add-ons
\cdsample
\drivers
\tools
\win98
autorun.inf
readme.txt
setup.exe

If you expand the \Win98 folder, you will see 4 subfolders
(channels/OLS/Content/Tour), and a whole list of .cab files as well as a few
others. Basically, if you can see the .cab files, then so will the upgrade
disk.

Hi Rick. Win 98 folder isn't quite the same here. I have :
MCDRoot
OLS
PWS
TOUR
UTIL
Base4 to 6.cab
Catalog3.cab
Driver11 to 20.cab
Net7 to 10.cab
and a bunch of other files.
I guess I won't really know until I try it.
Evesham did say that it _should_ allow an upgrade but they don't support
it.
Thanks.

Hi Rosie,

The important part is the cabs, it should be fine.
