No back up utility on OEM Home

E

El Jefe

I just went through one miserable experience no thanks to the folks in
Redmond

I had to do a full system recovery. Before executing the recovery I wanted
to back up files to a CD.
I know that the back up utility is not installed on the Home version of XP
and I would have to extract it from the Windows installation disk.

Well my wonderful Compaq has an OEM version of XPHome and the NTBackup file
is not in the recovery file on the D:drive.

I had to manually copy files to a CD and this was a problem since some files
were larger than 700 MB

I never want to have to go through this kind of back up again.

The question is how do I back up files without the utility?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
El Jefe

Many OEMs omit providing these features of the OS to their customers.

You'd probably have better luck to download NTBackup from:

Buy one of the many available, you can even find shareware ones, or ones
given away on PC mag cd's
Personally I've never used the backup utility, but I still have backups

You use another, more reliable utility. I regularly use BackupPlus, which
isn't expensive and can work quite well. In addition, its file format is
basically ZIP files. This means that while ZIP files are pretty reliable,
should things go wrong there are plenty of recovery and repair tools
available. This cannot be said of the ntbackup utility.

OEMs are not required to offer the complete contents of the retail CD, in
particular the ValueAdd folders. The decision to not include the backup
utility on your system was not made by Microsoft, but by HP/Compaq.

Why are you blaming "the folks in Redmond" for that? It's Compaq who decided
what to give you, not Microsoft.

At any rate, if you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi Also see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302894

However, the included XP backup utility is perhaps the weakest choice
available. There are lots of better choices available, and I would recimmend
getting a better one. I like Acronis True Image myself.

I am blaming "the folks in Redmond" for causing the problem in the first
place. I know it was the cost cutting bean counters at Compaq for not
including the Value Added files. If "the folks at Redmond did not screw up
my registry by answering an error report advising me to use the wonderful
Microsoft Reg Clean utility that I should download from them I would not
have had the problem it caused and could not fix when I also used the
procedure to reverse the registry cleaning.

Is that a clear enough explanation of how my problem was caused by "the
folks in Redmond"
