Upgrade Internal Hard Drive

We successfully installed the Seagate 160GB Internal Hard Drive and almost
everything seems to function with the exception ot two of the Office 2003
programs that we use all the time. Namely Outlook and Word. They both open
but with an error message superimposed which states:
"An error occured and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Please
run Setup and select "repair...." to restore this application.

I have done that from the dropdown menue of each help program and after
following the instructions ,including putting the Office 2003 Disk in the CD
Drive, I get the following message:

"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Patch Package."

Being a well seasoned citizen and admittedly a bit lacking is puter savy, I
was wondering if some one could help me restore these programs on our
computer with out a complete uninstall and reinstall of Office 2003.

Thank you
Dick H.

You write "We successfully installed the Seagate 160GB Internal
Hard Drive" but you do not say if you installed it as a second
disk or if it replaced the original disk. If it replaced the original
disk, how exactly did you copy the old disk to the new disk?

We used the cd that came with the seagate and have it installed as the boot
disc. The original disc is still in the tower but as a slave drive.
Does this information help?

No, it does not. I don't have the faintest idea what this
"Seagate CD" did. Does it create a clone of the old disk?

It is my understanding that it copied all of the original hard drive to the
new hard drive. I guess that would be yes it created a clone.

In this case you should post your question in an MS Office
newsgroup. Write that you successfully cloned your hard
disk and that Word and Outlook now fail to run.

It's important when cloning an OS in the WinNT/2K/XP family
to not let the clone see the "parent" OS when the clone is
started up for its very first run. The clone can get "confused"
is subtle ways. Instead, start up the clone after disconnecting
the drive which contains the "parent" OS. Thereafter, it's OK
for the clone to start up with its "parent" visible to it. If you're
wondering about starting up the "parent" with the virgin clone
visible to it - yes it's always OK. Don't worry about resetting
the jumpers on IDE drives when starting up the clone. The
removal of the original HD will make the clone HD get control
at boot time. Thereafter, to let the clone HD get boot control,
you can either reverse the Master/Slave jumpering, or go into
the BIOS and reset the HD boot order. If they are on different
cables, you can either exchange cables between the 2 HDs or
go into the BIOS and reset the HD boot order.

Thank you very much Timothy. I finally figured out that was my problem and I
went back and uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003. I was hoping to avoid
that but it seemed like the best solution. I have everything back now except
our email files which our isp provider is going to help us with tomorrow.
Thank you again for your help Timothy.
Sincerely
Dick H.

If you have the time and energy, it would be prudent to
re-clone the original HD. Once, when I forgot to isolate
the clone on its first startup, I found that *some* of the
..doc files in the clone's My Documents folder were not
really files but shortcuts to the corresponding original files
in the original HD. If I had not discovered that, I would
have eventually over-written the old HD and destroyed
the only copies of those files. And, for all I know, the
same thing could happen with other types of files, including
executable files. So, unless you have the time to check
ALL your files on the clone (with the original HD dis-
connected), you'd never be sure.

Thank you Timothy for the word of caution and advice. I have an 80GB external
hard drive that we use for all of our documents. And with the windows system
restore, I think I should be ok as long as the old hard drive is bootable.
That is actually all I intend to use it for. Thank you once again for your
your advice.
Incidentally, I still had a problem with our newly reinstalled "Outlook"
program when I went to bed last night. It seems we had a viable program but
had lost all of our old email records. I was going to work with the ISP
technician this pm when he was avcailable. However, when I woke up this
morning, there was a message that windows one step had installed an update
and re-booted automatically. Now the Email program is restored. Thank you
Windows One Step!!!!!! This is the second time a problem that occured has
been corrected by One Step overnight.
Sincerely
Dick H.
