Upgrade from Win 98 to Win XP Home

Anand

I currently use win 98 and when i boot up get a message
about a iedll file missing but can continue working. Win
98 came loaded on my PC 3 years back and its only now that
i started getting this message.

If I need to upgrade to XP, will the Upgrade package be
enough or would i have to go in for the full XP package?
I'm worried that if i do buy the Upgrade package then due
to this missing file or other bugs within 98, the upgrade
will not be able to do the job. The main question is if
the Upgrade package takes care of errors like these since
i don't have the Win 98 disks.

Any advice appreciated.

IEDLL.EXE is spyware, and you don't want that file back. Its part of Cool Web Search. There is a removal tool for this spyware:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

Additionally, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Highlight the My Computer icon and then click Edit, Find. Search for IEDLL.EXE When found, right click the value that contains IEDLL.EXE and select Delete.

The upgrade will probably not remove the registry entry that's still trying to run this file, but its easy enough to do manually.

No, not on an upgrade, but if you want to clean install, you will need the
disk for qualifying media.
