Updating

Edward W. Thompson

I had to run a 'repair' on WINXP Pro principally as the result of cloning my
installation to a new hard drive. After 'repairing' I ran an 'update' and
85 update files were downloaded. Unfortunately they 'fail' to install.
Simply put when I click on install, 'install' initializes and then a message
'failed to install' occurs.

I have tried ti install the files one at a time using 'custom' instead of
'Express'. I have also closed all running programs including antivirus and
firewall, I have also tried to install from 'safe mode with networking' all
without success. When running Wndows Update in 'safe mode I get the message
website is unavailable, I don't know whether this is normal..

I guess the question is how do I install the updates? Where are the
updatesd installed when they are downloaded. I must admit I haven't as yet
searched for them with the intent of trying to 'run' them from the raw
files.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi Edward W. Thompson,

Microsoft has just released a KB that deals with the problem you are
having with Windows Updates and a Repair Install of Windows XP.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a
Windows XP installation

Hope this isn't a duplicate but machine decided to reboot when replying. A
power hickup I think!

Thanks for you very comprehensive advice that will not only be helpful to me
but to many others I am sure.

With respect to my problem, I found the downloaded 'update files' that had a
'psm' file extension (intel persistent system manager, I believe). Anyway I
could not find any program that would allow me to access those files, other
than the native WINXP update program.

Trying to install the the updates using WINXP seemed to put the machine
(3.2GHz Pentium 4, 2MB RAM, 320GB, 80GB, 80GB HDD) into a loop with Task
Manager showing CPU usage at 60% plus and 1.5MB RAM). Process Explorer
indicated the machine was trying to install the updates but was in a loop as
no updates were being installed. The machjine was unusable in this
conditioon. I left the machine running over night in the remote hope it
would 'sort itself out' but it didn't. I then decided to install an week
old image of the C partition (WinXP) made from the previous HDD. This image
installed successfully (True Image) and all is now back to 'normal'.

As an aside this is the first time (long term user DOS thru Windows) I have
had to resort to a backup image to repair a problem. I was getting
complacent about 'backups' but no longer!

Thanks once more for your advice that I am sure will prove to be extremely
useful at some stage.
