Windows updates

I have a pc with Windows XP Home Media Edition, sp2. It got a nasty trojan
which I was able to remove. But after the removal I was unable to logon. I
ran the OS install repair and that corrected the problem. But once I was up
I had to repair the 2.0 net framework which is now OK. The problem now is
the MS updates will download but when the install starts, they all fail. I
installed Windows Defender also but when that when out to update itself, that
failed also. Any help would be appreciated.
