Updates Installing Without Permission

E

Erehwon

I have Windows XP with Automatic Updates configured to download but "let me
choose when to install". Lately, however, updates seem to be installing by
themselves. It's probably been over a month since I've seen the update
notification in the system tray. Today I happened to notice the update
notification shield, briefly, in the system tray but then it disappeared.
Checking Microsoft's update site my updates appear to be current. I recall
some discussion about a specific update installing without permission a
couple of months ago (?) but not about this occurring on a regular basis.
Is it just my computer or are others seeing the same thing?

Erechwon,

You should be posting to the correct newsgroup

microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Also, if you're using XP Pro you can set policies to automatically approve, but more than
likely if you went into Automatic Updates in Control Panel & change it there it will help
resolve the problem you're facing

Hello

in this case do the following steps:

1. Whenever you see the yellow colour update icon on the the right hand side
bottom near the system clock. just click on that: you will see a windows
coming up. there click on custom button. you will get the list of all the
available updates, from there you can select the windows updates which u want
to install according to your requirements. otherwise u can install all the
updates.

2. one more way is ...open the internet explorer. click on tools tab on the
top and click on the windows updates. Windows will start searching the
updates for your computer and then click on the custom button to install the
updates....if you dont want soem updates just remove the check mark from
there and click on " Dont dhow the updates again" and continue with updates.

I already had updates configured to "Download updates for me, but let me
choose when to install them" and Microsoft Update shows no critical updates
other than "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)". Don't
know why that one was missed, or if that could be causing problem, but
updating now and will repost issue to windowsupdate newsgroup if problem
continues.
Thanks

What 'Custom' button on the windows coming up - not with my little yellow

Download or cancel is the only choice I get - and for all others I suspect.

Hello

If this .net framework update is coming up and not installing...then follow
the following steps. Let me tell you the .net frameworks are not properly
installed and they are important for many device drivers on the compuuter.
The following steps will take around 1 hour to complete one by one...so
perform these steps with calm mind. I performed these steps many time when I
was in Microsoft :

0. First run this .net removal tool from this website.
http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip
you have to save the tool and then run it .

1. Install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable
Package fro
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&DisplayLang=en

2. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 fro
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en

3. Install ASP.NETSecurity Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Service Pack 1 fro
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8A-29EB-49CF-9DBC-1A0DC2273FF9&displaylang=en

4. Install KB928366 fro
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cd-c715-4f05-a01f-0455d2d9ebfb&DisplayLang=en

Then we can advice you to install Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0
Redistributable Package (x86) fro
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

I have Windows XP with Automatic Updates configured to download
but "let me choose when to install".
Lately, however, updates seem to be installing by themselves.
I recall some discussion about a specific update
installing without permission a couple of months ago...

Perhaps these, according to an outsider
(supported by documentation):

"Microsoft updates Windows without users' consent" [2007-09-13]
http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070913/#story1

Some of these are updates to Windows Update itself,
and could be suspected of relating to Microsoft's
obnoxious (and basically unconstitutional in USA) habit
of presuming your copy of Windows to be illegal,
if not forever submitting to remote re-inspection ("illegal search")
by Active-X controls which you are forced to install,
according to possibly new and stricter criteria which may not
even have existed as of when you bought your current version.
