unwanted password

Hi. I have a 3-computer home network that has run problem-free for 3 years.
My server is a desktop running XP Home ed that is connected to the Internet
with DSL. The others are a desktop and a laptop, both running ME. I use Intel
Anypoint wireless USB adapters on the 2 desktops and an Intel Anypoint PC
card in the laptop.

My XP system crashed when I was installing a new Quicken application. I
couldn't reatart it and had to do a standard system recovery. I re-downloaded
SP2 and was unable to establish ICS until I uninstalled SP2. So now I have
ICS, but neither client can access my server because the system keeps asking
for a password that I never set. I've tried some of the things suggested on
this newsgroup for access problems, but nothing has solved my problem. I've
run and rerun the network setup disk but after an entire wasted week, I still
can't use my network.

Any help would be appreciated. (BTW, I tried to get help from Verizon Online
(my DSL), but was told that because I don't have a router, I don't have a
network. So I guess I've been running a phantom NW for 3 years. ;-)

I'm sorry that you're having such problems, and I hope that we can
help solve them.

It's hard to know what to suggest -- we don't know what options you
gave to the Network Setup Wizard, what the password prompt says, or
what things you've already tried to solve the access problems.

Here are some things to try on the server computer:

1. Type this line in the Start | Run box:

net user guest /active:yes

2. Remove the network password from the Guest account:

a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
c. Click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password.
e. Click OK without entering a new password.

3. Un-share and re-share all shared disks and folders.

4. Make sure that a firewall isn't blocking access from the other
computers.

If those tips don't solve the problem, please reply to this message in
the news group (not by E-mail) with more information to help other
people understand the problem. Give as much detail as you can,
including exactly what the password prompt says, the full text of all
error messages, steps that you've already tried, etc.

Thanks, Steve. Unfortunately that didn't work for me. There are no firewalls
on the client computers, and I have disabled the Windows XP firewall. I will
try to give you a full account of my efforts, but cannot do that today. I'll
post again as soon as I can.

Thanks.

OK, things I've tried: The things you've mentioned - unsharing and resharing
all the drives & folders on my server; the net user guest /active:yes and
control userpasswords2. (The password box was empty and I clicked OK.) I
checked both clients for firewalls & made sure the server's was off.

The message I get when I click on my server's icon from either client is:

"You must supply a password to make this connection.
Resource \Kristina\IPC$
Password _____________
x Save this password in your password list."

If I click OK I get the message that the password is not recognized. I have
to click cancel to get rid of the password request.

I have gone into my user accounts and given full control to the guest
account. The other accounts are Owner and Administrator, both of which are
Administrator type accounts.

I've tried starting my computer in safe mode with networking to turn off
"simple file sharing" (although I couldn't find that option under folder
options) and reshared the C drive on my server (Kristina).

I tried this from a post:
"With Simple File Sharing disabled, right click "C:\Program Files" in Windows
Explorer, click Sharing and Security, and share the folder. Then, click the
Permissions button to specify network access permissions, and click the
Security tab to specify NTFS file system permissions. A network user needs
both permissions in order to access the share."

The problem with the above instruction was that there were so many different
places to set permissions that I was confused. I set all of them for full
control, but frankly, didn't know what I was doing.

I did go to the website suggested. It was only about XP Pro, but I tried the
instructions for permitting network access w/o a password. Under
Administrative Tools there is no Local Security Policy, but I went into
Computer Management, then Shares. In my list of Shared Folders I found this
"IPC$" with no path. My server C drive is also on the list as Presario (C)
with the path C:\

The website also describes going into Computer Management and says you can
fine tune user accounts but says nothing about Shares.

NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. My workgroup is the same for all 3 computers.

I don't know if any of this is helpful, but that's everything I've done.

Thanks.
