unwanted columns in windows explorer that i can't make go away

I recently noticed that all folders in my computer (running XP SP2) display
the artist, album title, year, etc. columns that one would expect to see when
the folder contains music. Going into view>properties>customise and chosing
"Documents" or "Video" doesn't help - those columns are still there.
How do I remove them globally, without having to go into every folder and
change them manually?

Do you know if there is a way to do this on Vista; and make it stick? I have
done it at least 10 times to my documents folder but within a few weeks it
begins showing artist, genre, etc. again. This is some sort of Vista bug.
Maybe it occurs when Vista updates are applied.
