Unwanted character when pressing ENTER or SPACE BAR

When typing a new email, or replying, each time I press the enter key, or the
space bar key, inserted into the paragraph is a rectangle character key. It
does NOT show up in the reader's pane, nor does this happen when using MS
Word (this is my email editor). I have tried numerous way to correct this,
to no avail.

Help!

You say that it does *not* happen when you use Word, which is your email
editor. *When* does it happen then...?

Certain "strange" characters ( ¶ ) can be turned off in Word by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+8.

This occurs in an email message only. And again, the recipient of the email
does not see this character. But it is very frustrating to have them on my
screen when composing an email.
