strange characters appear when I use space bar or carriage return

When typing an outgoing message, I get strange characters every time I use
space bar or carriage return. Recipient doesn't see the strange characters
but it's very confusing on my end! This started happening after I pasted a
table from a website into an email message and edited it. I've already tried
restarting, checking html setting etc...

Do they go away if you hit Control-Shift-8?
