Unrecognized Database Format

I recently created a database and placed it on a shared drive for multiple
users to access. The file has been working fine without a problem however,
this afternoon when attempting to open the file, we received an error message
Unrecognized Database Format (filename.mdb). We were able to restore the file
from last nights back up without a problem. My question is, why would this
happen. Is there something I can do to prevent this in the future.

Bravo for having a fresh backup. Often there's nothing better than that.

I have a white paper in a Word document named Fix Corrupt Access Database
towards the bottom this page. It has tips on preventing corruption.

Don't discount that some dummy opened it up in Word and saved it as a Word
file with an MDB extension. Seen it done before. As Access requires the users
to have nearly full privileges on the folder holding the database, there's
not much that you can do to prevent it.

I got this recently and discovered that it was due to a specific PC with a
faulty network connection. I suggest you either check out the nics and
cables for each PC or systematically allow each pc to access the database
one at a time until you find the culprit.
