Unreadable HD

I have just installed XP on my PC the original OS was 98.
The PC has a primary and slave Hard Drives, the primary
had XP installed and the PC boots up OK, however I cannot
access the slave disk. It is listed in device manager but
it is not recognised in disk management. Obviously this
disk was originally formatted by 98, what do I have to do
to get XP to initialize it.

Thanks

Yes the jumpers were set to Slave as it was working under
98 as the primary slave.

If I understand correctly Win98 and the hd were installed on this pc running
OK?
You then installed a new hd, set new to primary and installed WinXP?
Old hd then set to slave?
Both hd's are shown in the Bios setup?
Auto select?, if manual are the slave hd settings correct?
Is any Bios update available? - not that I would expect this to cure,if hd
was prev.OK
There is nothing in XP that would prevent it 'seeing/accessing' the old hd
Double check all the Bios/hd jumper settings and perhaps more importantly
check the slave hd IDE cable

Thanks very much for your help on this. Your synopsis is
almost right.

The PC originally had the same 2 HD's, a Primary master,
and Primary slave, this has not changed, all I have done
is format the Primary master and install XP. XP works OK
but the slave disk cannot be read by XP, although it is
visible in Device Manager.

I have removed and re-added it in device manager all to no
avail.

Paul

Was GoBack ever involved in this scenario? Have had many drives show up as
unreadable if they are not removed from GoBack's monitoring before being
used with another operating system.

Preparing the drive originally with drive overlay software is another
possible cause but this is not seen as often now as it once was.
