unread vs read items

In outlook 2000 at the very bottom left of the window just above the taskbar
there was a display showing the total number of items in the folder, then a
comma and the number of unread items. I have a user who has noticed that in
outlook 2003 in this same location the total number of items is shown but the
number of unread items does not appear. I know you can set outlook to show
the number of unread items in a particular folder just to the right of it in
the folder list, but the user does not keep the navaigation pane open. Is
there a way to have the unread items shown at the bottom left? (This would be
on the same line as the online vs offline indicator at the bootom right)
Outlook 2000 had this capability. User is running office 2003 with SP1 and
all office updates applied.
