how to show the number of unread items on public folder shortcuts

How can I display the number of unread or total items next to the public
folder shortcuts and in the folder navigation pane for Outlook 2003. I notice
that under properties that the show unread items radio is set but also
disabled. In older versions of Outlook the unread items show.
