Are you trying to reset the counter of unread messages in the Windows XP
Welcome Screen? If yes,

Confirm that the method is this:
1. Start > Run > type "regedit".
2. In the left pane, navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
3. In the right pane, double click "MessageCount".
4. In the text field under "Value data:", type "0".

Type all those without the inverted commas...

If the method was similar with your method, you may want to go to the URL
below, that may resolve the problem... By the way, I am not responsible for
any loses your computer whether fatal or otherwise.

I have written with MVP help, a script to manage unread messages. You
can try it.

Hi

Download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx and
when installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go
to Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

Otherwise the Unread Mail message can be disabled via the Registry -
navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Youremailaddress]
- double click on 'MessageCount' - in the right hand pane - and change the
value to 0(Zero).
