how to get rid of unread mail messages on welcome screen

Sam

Hi,

I am not able to get rid of the "unread mail messages" notification on
the welcome screen on my computer running Windows XP SP2.

I remember being able to hide the message last year. I reinstalled the
OS a few months ago and since then I haven't been able to get rid of
that message.

I have tried to change the value of this registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

but I do not have Unread mail entry there at all. I used to earlier though.

So has something changed in XP recently? And suggestions on how to get
rid of the unread mail messages?

thanks,
Sam.

Hi

Download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when
installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go to
Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

I had seen this mentioned somewhere else as well while search google for
this problem. I also recall that underneath the GUI, it changes the same
registry as the one I had mentioned earlier. And since I do not have
Unread Main entry in the registry to begin with, I didn't try TweakUI.

Does TweakUI do anything different?

thanks,
Sam.

I downloaded the TweakUI and disabled that option and it worked like a
charm.

An aside, so this confuses me. What is the underlying registry entry
that got changed now? Not that it is really important, but asked just
for information's sake.

Thanks,

Compliments of Kelly:

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)

To remove an account or to change the count manually:

Start>Run>Regedit>navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]. In the right pane modify: Message Count, Change it to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. In
the right pane modify: MessageExpiryDays Change it to 0.

But these keys didn't exist when I checked a few days ago. I wonder why?

But TweakUI worked so that solved the problem.

Recheck the registry keys - see what has changed.
