Registry not correct question...

J

JFF KRWD

Hi...

I just got a new email address (because of switching from dial-up to cable).
My email and internet seem to be working fine.

The problem is that when I go in the registry to find the below HKEY I do
not see my new email address (only my two old ones).

@@@

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]

@@@

What started me looking at this is that the count for unread emails is not
correct on my XP login screen.

How do I fix my registry problem? Someone suggested using...
TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count

but it seems there should be a setting or something, somewhere within XP or
OE or ???, that I could change so that the registry picks up my new email
address correctly. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi

Have you rebooted since changing your email address? Some Registry changes
need that for the alteration to take effect. Tweak UI can be used to get
rid of the 'Unread Mail' on the Welcome screen.

Hello Will Denny...

Yes... I have rebooted... didn't fix it :-(.

This really has me puzzled... humph.

Jeff.

Wow.... thanks Kelly.

I have glanced at the doc, very informative... I'll give it a full read soon
as I can :)!

Hi Jeff,

The Welcome Screen mail reader/counter only works with specific email
clients. With OE being one of them of course, having other users and
different email addresses come into play, as well.

Darn :-(.... I read the doc and it all made sense but it didn't quite solve
the problem. The doc (and everything else I can find online) talks about
dealing with the existing HKEY (see full HKEY below). The problem I am
having is that the final part of the path "[Your E-Mail Address]", doesn't
exist. Somehow when I switched from Dial-up to cable and got a new email
address the new HKEY ending with that email address wasn't created.

I've done lots of looking online and can't find any mention of others having
this problem. So, I'm completely stumped.

Thanks,
Jeff.

Kelly...

Just thought I'd let you know that I tried TweakUI... turning off and then
back on the display of the unreadmail counter on the login screen.

Thought maybe that'd do something...
didnt :-(.

Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

What value does the dword have? Make sure under: MessageExpiryDays
It doesn't read 0.

Hi Kelly....

dword does not equal 0. I'm not sure what the value is because when I did a
find on dword it found several of them and I couldn't tell which one was
under MessageExpiryDays. But none of the dword values were 0.

It seems odd to me that as many people as have gotten new email address that
this problem would be so unique. This isn't like really important, I could
just turn it off. So if you are stumped too I guess I'll just do that.
[Though I am still eager to push on if you have any other ideas ;-)].

I appreciate your help,
Jeff.

Oops... thats just what I was looking for before... don't know why its
obvious now :-/

The value for

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
MessageExpiryDays is 3, and the messagecount dword for the old email address
that it was incorrectly displaying is still 1.

----

There has been a change since I wrote last... though I don't think I changed
anything. Now the unread email counter is not displayed on the login
panel... though when I look in tweakui it has a check in the box for "show
unread mail on welcome screen" and also reads "consider email abandoned
after [3] days"

So... I'm glad you're not stumped... cause I don't have a clue whats
happening :-/

Thanks Kelly,
Jeff.
