unplugging router

hi

my internet connection is fine through my belkin router - either wireless or
wired ..

but if i remove the router and plug the ethernet cable directly into the
cable modem i get no internet??

anyone know why?
is there a windows setting i need to change or something?

Power off everything then power on the modem then the computer.

The reason is simple. The cable modem is configured by your ISP to
only give out one IP address. When you have your router connected to
the modem, the Router gets that one IP address. When you disconnect
the router, the modem notices that it has disappeared, but since the
router didn't formally return the IP lease to the modem before it was
disconnected, the modem is obligated to wait until the lease time
expires before giving that one IP address to another device. Lease
times range from a few hours to a week depending on the ISP.... so
you have two choices: wait until the lease expires or power-
cycle/reset the modem so it starts out fresh again.
