Looking for new router

I currently have an old Belkin pre-N router that works well, but I was
considering getting a newer one with faster speeds.
I have heard some good reports of Netgear, so I am looking into those.
There are quite a few and the choice is hard to make. Could anyone
please advise me on which might be best for my needs?

I use Virgin internet and there is a small cable modem that Virgin
supplied that is connected to the main port of the Belkin router.

I have a Mac Pro connected via ethernet and an XBox also connected via
ethernet to the router.

We also use three Macbook Pros that we use near the router downstairs
connected via wifi and a windows xp pc upstairs that connects through a
Belkin usb adapter.
I can get wifi from the macbook pros out into the back yard about 10 meters.

They all work well at the moment but I have no idea what connection
speeds I am getting.

I tried getting an apple airport extreme base station but returned it
because I couldn't get the network to work. Only the ethernet stuff worked.
I have had good service from the Belkin, so I would look at those again.

I am looking at the Netgear wnr 2000 and the wnr 3500. I was looking at
the dual band routers, like the wndr 3700, but I worry about whether
it's worth it for me and whether it might introduce compatibility
problems or setup difficulties is it has two bands and the hardware has
to be set up for a specific band or could get confused as to which band
to use.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Only I can suggest you is RouterBoard running Mikrotik plus singe
Atheros 802.11n card.

After 8 years almost daily work with wifi devices, i can say: This is
only REAL router. You can take it like Cisco on SOHO market.

if this is too "profesional" for you, take a look to Ubiquity and Compex
products.
