"Unknown Device" USB 2.0 ports

My USB 2.0 ports are being recognized as Unknown Devices
as soon as I boot (has nothing to do with hybernation).
Removal causes Windows XP to add them again as Unknown
Devices. Scanning for changes doesn't help. Cannot
update device drivers. Cannot roll them back because
there are no drivers to roll back. Can't seem to force
WinXP to install the right thing because WinXP is so darn
helpful.

When we installed XP and SP1, we may have had the "Stop
EHCI HC in OHCI handover" in our BIOS Enabled (can't
remember the text). However, disabling it hasn't helped.

The vendor of the motherboard has the following
instructions for installing the USB drivers for this
board:

"Please go to 'Windows Update'
to download Windows XP Service Pack 1 because Microsoft
EHCI
drivers are included."

SP1 has been installed but as I noted, it was installed
while the above goofy BIOS switch was enabled. Windows
troubleshooter can't shoot anything (as usual).

Recommendations? Reinstall SP1? Reinstall WinXP...and
every other bloody thing i've installed?

Motherboard is a ASUS SK8N, processor is an Opteron 140.
Can't find support for this issue anywhere.

Please email if you have any ideas!!!

Go to http://www.usbman.com and get a download patch file or file to enable
USB 2.0 on systems that use 2.0

There is also a usb drivers for 1.1

Hope that helped?

I should also point out that XP did install EHCI. I have
one PCI to USB host controller, two OpenHCD USB Host
controllers, and three USB root hubs....that and 6 unknown
devices. I just can't use the USB ports because XP
apparently recognizes them as devices when it should not.

Yes, reinstall SP1, if the drivers for it are supported in
SP1, then installing it should make windows recognize it.
As long as it is PNP which usb is MEANT to be, though I
usually call it Plug and Pray.
