Uninstall service pack 1???

M

Mary Green

I procrastinated installing a firewall and for that sin I
had the "blast worm" infection for a half hour or so, I
cleaned it out no problem. While I was getting the patch
from Microsoft it made me install Service Pack 1, which
took forever to download, as well as another bunch of
patches.
After I installed them, both my sound card and printer
would not operate at all. I got an updated driver for the
sound card, installed it and all is fine there. but...I
have an Epson Stylus Color 800 printer that works great
and had been working great on this computer for months on
a USB port. My computer is a Toshiba Satellite Pro, 1.7
mz, 40 gig hard driver, 25 free. I have looked all over
the web for an XP driver for this printer without
success. Finally I found a mention on Epson's web site
that says you have to buy their USB cable to get the
necessary drivers, which are not available separately.
The catch is no store seems to stock this item. Is there
any way to undo installation of SP1 to get it back to the
point where it was working fine????

One should not uninstall SP1.....it is a critical update for XP.

SP1 is critical because some current & future critical updates require SP1
to be installed as a prerequisite.

Hi Nicholas

SP1 is **not** a Critical Update. Anyone with XP installed does **not** have to install SP1. Some of the updates included in SP1 are critical, but not all - I have proved this with 4 of my PCs and eight other PCS. Can you provide proof of your posting - I can provide proof of my findings...

Hi Nicholas

I don't agree.

Scenario - a 'clean' install. SP1 does ****not*** have to be installed as all updates can be downloaded manually - and then the user can decide which updates are needed.

I have gone this route more than 50 times and I can assure you that there is problem with this method.

Hi

Parts of SP1 are Critical - not all of SP1 is Critical. I would like the link that you say all of SP1 is Critical. MS don't claim that. So you are saying that you know more than MS do?

Here's an example of an update that will not install unless
SP1 is installed:

The Q330994 patch will only install if SP1 is installed.

I ran into this problem yesterday when someone could not install
the patch they needed. Once SP1 was installed, the patch would install.

Do the math dude, parts are critical, ok. You cant download just the
critical parts. Now, since you cant just download the critical parts would
that make it not critical? No, SP1 includes security updates needed to keep
your system safe. if you dont believe me i'll send you a link for will
lanuch your Help and Support center and in the process delete your My
Documents or Program Files folder. this is a hole in Windows XP. SP1 fixes
this along with much more, only stupid little shit's would run Windows XP
without SP1.

look, the bottem line is for any home or business user they need to install
SP1 dispite your opinion. It doesnt matter if it is critical or not,
eveyone should have it installed. If you dont want your computer to be
secure and stable dont install it, but if you do want it to be secure and
stable install it.

Hi Nicholas

I would have to disagree on the 330994 patch.

Are you privy to the WU Beta NGs? If you are, then you will know that the
Q330994 patch can be installed before SP1 is installed.

No - parts of SP1 are Critical.

Logic - does that therefore mean that all of SP1 is Critical?

Logic - If parts of SP1 are Critical - does that mean that all the other parts that are not Critical, are non-critical?

Logic - If the parts of SP1 that may be critical, what is the status of the SP1 non- critical parts, which may or may not non-critical?

Will;
If parts are critical, it is Critical.
The patch is as important as the most important single part.
Since some parts are critical, SP1 is a Critical Update.

Further proof will be seen next year upon the release of SP2.
You will need either SP1 or SP2 to get any further updates after that
time.

The final proof:
Go to the Windows Catalog and search for Windows XP RTM and only
select Critical Updates.
Microsoft considers SP1 a critical Update.
What you or I think is not important.

Hi Jupiter

If 'some' parts of SP1 are Critical is it logical to assume that *all* parts SP1 are Critical? If you think that it is 'logical' - I would be grateful to read your findings.

Chris, most of the postings from yourself in the XP NGs have been 'non-essential'. This last posting of yours has proved it. Please consider yourself **plonked**, as I have no patience with losers. Take care.
