Uninstall Internet Conneciton Sharing

D

DanD

I am attempting to install a Cisco VPN client and it
fails because it is not compatible with Internet
Connection Sharing. I am on WinXP pro sp2 and can not
figure out how to turn ICS off.
I have searched the net and found som "how to's" but my
advanced tab of the NetCards properties does not have the
ICS check box that the articles refer to.
Any ideas?

The message from the Cisco VPN client is misleading. It isn't
possible to install or un-install Internet Connection Sharing in
Windows XP.

I've seen reports that you can solve the problem by disabling the
ICF/ICS service before installing the VPN client and enabling the
service afterwards.

To disable the ICF/ICS service:

1. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
2. Double click Services and Applications.
3. Double click Services.
4. Double click "Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS)".
5. If the Service status is Started, click Stop.

To enable it after the installation, repeat those steps, clicking
"Start" in step 5.

According to the Cisco web site, VPN Client versions 3.5(1)D and later
have a parameter to ignore the ICS check prior to installing.

Another possibility is to install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or 2.

Thank you very much, that did the trick.

One minor note, the service name is "Windows Internet
Connection Firewall ....

Thanks again

You're welcome, Dan. I'm glad that my suggestion helped you solve the
problem.

Thanks for the note about the service name. Service Pack 2 changed it
from "Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS)" to "Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)".

The name remains ICF/ICS service on all of my XP Home SP2 installs.
FWIW.
