Unexpected error message - Not enough memory

Hi - I know have enough disk space and memory (80 GB + 512 MG RAM) because I just bought the computer and have 69 of the original 80 GB left. We have a commercial ecommerce site and we do store a lot of pictures on our drive. I bought the new computer becasue my old laptop suddenly began to give me this message when we began to use FrontPage extensions and shared borders etc. I assumed that this was true since we had the laptop for years, and bought the new computer. I transferred what I could of the web site from the old computer to my new one and when I did I almost immediately began to receive the error message: "Unexpected error occurred. Not enough memory available to complete operation. Close other programs to make memory available, the try again." Does anyone know the best way to solve this? Thanks, Chris http://globaldiscount.net

If 2K or XP here is link to some troubleshooting tips.
Check out: Problems with Virtual Memory at the bottom of the page.

Hi Steve - thank you for answering. I have read that article but it is over my head - I can figure out where to go as far as into the control panel etc, and that is about the extent of it. I am using Microsoft XP by the way, and FrontPage 2002. I have 69 GB of the original 80 GB and 512 RAM and the computer is about 3-4 weeks old

I do see in the Settings under Performance in the control panel that I can change from (ie) "Let windows choose what's best for my computer" to "Adjust for best performance" - but I wasn't sure that was the correct decision. It is now set on "Let windows choose whats best for the computer". I haven't found any place to increase the file numbers (to (ie) increase upward as the article suggests. Perhaps that is available when you hit "Custom" in Performance Settings?. I don't feel real comfortable changing things when I'm not sure what I am doing either. Thanks, Chris

After I wrote the above I went back into my computer and found the "Advanced" in "Advanced" in - saw "Virtual Memory" and in there are the boxes??? that one would change or increase? My total paging file size for all drives is: 755MB and the Initial Size (MB): 756 and the Maximum size: 1512. The "System Managed size" is not checked and the "no paging file is not checked (both are off). Total Paging file size for all drives is: Minimum allowed is 2MB, Recommended is 754 MB and Currently allocated is 755MB. Is the problem becasue the allocated number is is too small? Thanks, Chris

Since you did not include the original post or thread in your response no one knows what you are talking about

With FrontPage closed, do a search for *.web files and delete them. These
are hidden, system files, usually located in C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache in
winXP.

The memory problem is often caused by a corrupted .web file.

Hi Ronx - Thank you so much for your help! I did as you suggested but when I got into Microsoft looking for Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache in winXP I wasn't able to find Web Server Extensions. I loaded the 2002 program Front Page in my self - actually I loaded an oleder version FrontPage 98 in first, then the 2002 version. At any rate I couldn't find the Web Server Extensions using the path you indicated. Thanks Chris

Hi, can someone repost this query please, I just noticed this response just now
and never saw the original post or responses.

I have the same (or similar) 'not enough memory' error ("Not enough memory to
complete that function" or similar). that crops up, in the 'open file' dialogue
or when I use the "up" navigation icon on the tool bar (the yellow folder with a
little black arrow) to go up one level in the folder hierarchy.

it doesn't do this with any other application and only recent.ly started doing
it.

Any advice appreciated - I use Frontpage 2002 - and have 512megs RAM - quite
enough I think! Windows manages my swap file, and I have around 30gb of a 40gb
harddrive free. Have recently defragged etc.

Is this a Windows system problem or a Frontpage problem - I downloaded recent
patches and so on for this version but it still continues.

Is this a known issue?

Have you tried the usual repairs in the sequence below:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) In Windows Explorer Find and delete the file hidden file CMDUI.PRF
Usually in C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\State
4) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
5) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
6) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
7) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Also make sure your video card drivers and direrctX are up to date

The original query was similar to yours, but not so specific:
<snip preamble>
"I transferred what I could of the web site from the old computer to my new
one and when I did I almost immediately began to receive the error message:
"Unexpected error occurred. Not enough memory available to complete
operation. Close other programs to make memory available, the try again."
Does anyone know the best way to solve this? Thanks, Chris "

Amalgamating the responses from wp and myself:

The memory problem is often caused by a corrupted .web file.
Start/search/For files or folders/enter *.web in the search box, look in all
drives
and check the boxes to include system and hidden files/folders in the
search.
