I'm wondering if this is caused due to incorrect registry permissions (for the mailto branch), or due to missing "URL Protocol" registry value. See if this article applies:

Try both of these steps:
Click Start, select Default Programs
Click Set program access and computer defaults
Click Custom, and select Windows Mail
Click OK
Then, follow these steps:
Click Set your default programs
Select your mail client from the list
Click Set this program as default
Click OK

When I click on a mail to link in or out of Windows Mail I get this error
message:
Could not perform operation because the mail client is not installed
properly
Windows Mail is set as my default so I don't understand. Can anyone help?
