unable to type in search boxes

I am trying to help a friend who is running Windows 98.
The problem is that she can browse any website however
when she tries to enter any details in a search box or
tries to fill in personal details to register she is
unable to type into the boxes. The cursor does not appear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
