IE error message counting up

Hi people,

My friend is having a major problem with IE6 on a
computer running winxp. when connected to the internet
she has a small box pop up that displays 'IE Error' it
repeats itself over and over until it gets to about 200
boxes then starts all over again. When this happens she
is unable to access anything and has to shut IE down. She
is able to access mail in Outlook but cannot surf. she is
also having problems with downloading windows updates.
any help much appreciated.

do the usual.. scan for virus. free antivirus at grisoft.com
scan for spyware
ad-aware lavasoftusa.com ,, spybot safer-networking.org
. update both before scan.
reinstall (repair) ie using add/remove programs.
get a better browser firefox from mozilla.org
