Unable to restrart Windows XP

After shutting down the system I have been trying to restart the computer
(older compaq Presario on which I have loaded XP). It was working fine until
the shutdown. After restarting with the XP disk I receive the following
message on setup - Setup is starting Windows - then Windows shuts down and I
get this message: The problem seems to be caused by the following file:
setupdd.sys - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

I did not install any new hardware/software prior to the original shutdown.
This was the first time I had turned the computer off since installing XP.
