unable to open microsoft word documents

when i try to open a word document a box pops up that says "This file does
not have a program associated w/ it for performing this action. Create an
association in the folder options control panel" I went to the options
control folder and i clicked on the file types but I am lost as to what to do
next.
I am not sure what version of word I have but it is what came w/ Microsoft
Windows XP, Home Eddition, version 2002
service pack 2. ....Please help!!

Word is not included with Windows XP. It is a separate application. If you
don't have Word installed, you will get that message.
