Unable to log on to webmail or delete mails from webmail inbox

I have recently installed XP pro sp2.

Now, I am unable to log on to my webmail site.

For example, when I type in my user name and password and click on the
"login" button, the IE6 progress bar shows as if the page is being
loaded but thereafter everything comes to a standstill and finally the page
"Cannot Find Server" with the message "The page cannot be displayed.
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might
be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your
browser settings." comes on.

In another free webmail site, I can sign in but experience the same
phenomenon when I click on the delete button after selecting some of the
mails in my inbox. Only partial progress of page loading followed by
complete inactivity and finally the page "Cannot Find Server" coming up.

These sites, however, work absolutely fine when I boot up with my old
98se that I still have on my PC in dual boot.

I have already tried following with no result:

1. Turned off windows firewall
2. Installed Sun java runtime
3. Installed MS java vm
4. Turned off pop up blocking in IE6
5. Allowed all cookies in IE6
6. Installed and used Firefox to access these sites but the result is just
the same as it was while using IE.

I can't even search on 'Google groups advance search' site. After entering
search criteria, clicking on 'search' button yields the same result.

Interesting point is normal surfing of the internet i.e. clicking on links
is working fine.

I am totally at a loss as to what else to do expect reinstalling the OS.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have scanned my complete system with AdAwareSE Personal, Spybot S&D and
also with Hijackthis. No malware had been reported by any of these
programs.

Shall immensely appreciate receiving any further help. It is really a big
annoyance to me, to the extent that if the problem could not be solved, I
shall have to discard XP and go back to Win 98.

Scanning with HijackThis doesn't fix anything. It's not a
hijackware-removing tool. Read the last paragraph of my last reply.

What I meant was that the log of HijackThis did not indicate presence of
any malware.
Any further clue?

Do *not* disable the Windows Firewall if you're not running
third-party firewall

Those may well be symptoms of a hijackware infection

All Hijackthis does is take a picture of what is starting up/runnin
on your system. It will not tell you that you have spyware. You nee
to take the file that Hijackthis generates and post it to one of th
sites recommended above. Hope this helps
