Unable to install Microsoft Q818506 on Citrix Xpa 1.0 for Win2k se

I have a Citrix XPa 1.0 for Win2k server which has IE 6.0 SP1 applied already
and I need to install Q818506.exe on that server. Once I double clicked
Q818506.exe, the message "This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 Service
Pack 1 to be installed." was displayed and I could not proceed to install the
hotfix.

Then, I visited www.microsoft.com and attempted to install the IE 6.0 SP1
again. However, the installer of IE 6.0 SP1 prompted me the message "The mot
recent versions of all items are already installed. It is recommended that
you exit Setup without reinstalling." and let me choose either "Exit Setup"
or "Reinstall all components". I chose "Exit Setup" to quit the installation
and went back to Q818506 and got the same message when attempting to install
it

What should I do to get rid of this problem and install the Q818506?

The error's telling you that you have a later version of the 818596 file
(wininet.dll v6.00.2800.1207, 09 Jul-02) already installed (e.g., Cumulative
Security Update for IE, MS05-025/883939, 14 Jun-05, installs wininet.dll
v6.0.2800.1506).

If you're still having the problem which 818596 addresses...

<QP>
When Microsoft Internet Explorer makes many requests for objects, it may
stop responding (hang). Requests to the current Web server may not be
completed, and the Internet Explorer window displays an arrow-hourglass
pointer.

When this problem occurs, images may not appear as expected, and a message
may appear in the status bar at the bottom of the window that there are a
certain number of "items remaining", or it may say "Done".
</QP>

....your current version of wininet.dll most likely is not the problem.

Is Win2K SP4 installed? Have you installed 891861/Update Rollup 1 for
Windows 2000 SP4 (http://support.microsoft.com/?id=891861)?

The version of my \winnt\system32\wininet.dll is v6.0.2800.1405 and dated
6-Feb-04. I have applied IE SP1, Q867801, Q823353, Q8339989 applied to my IE.
My Win2k is SP3 patched and no Security Rollup is installed.

Does my version of wininet.dll resolve the said problem?

Thanks.

v6.0.2800.1405 is newer than v6.0.2800.1207. If your problem's caused by
wininet.dll, the version you have should have fixed it as such files are
cumulatively updated (IOW newer versions include or replace fixes in older
ones).

Installing the latest Cumulative Update for IE (MS05-025) would give the
machine and even newer version of wininet.dll (v6.0.2800.1506). Whether it
or other files included in MS05-025 will address your problem remains to be
seen.

It's generally best to let Windows Update identify updates a machine needs
rather than picking & choosing ones you think it needs, Terence.

Let us know how you make out.

Robear,

A caveat here will be whether he already has a hotfixed module
in the set being updated. If not he would only be installing the latest
cumulative non-hotfixed versions (RMTGDR versions), not the RTMQFE
versions that he might be hoping for.

1405 looks as if it should be from a hotfix (e.g. KB831167)
but I had an incident where it appears not to have been seen
as a hotfixed version by a cumulative update.

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...f7ba&mid=edfd8e41-9710-4cf7-9317-57ee86b2a109

(Do finds for 1486 to focus on the relevant point.)

One way to ensure that he gets the hotfixed versions would be to use

<title>KB889669 - An update rollup is available for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1</title>

Apparently that would give him a wininet.dll with 6.0.2800.1480
for a version number; so it looks as if it would apply to his case (1405)
without conflict (e.g. without possibility of regression).

Then, when he installs the 883939 it would automatically give him
the RTMQFE version at 1506 (instead of the RTMGDR 1505.)

At least, that's the way I read all this stuff. ;)
