q818506.exe problems installing the patch NT 4.0 SP6A/IE 6SP1

I'm having problems installing the q818506.exe patch for
IE 6 SP1 on my NT 4.0 SP6a installation. The install
complains that I don't have IE 6 SP1 installed which is
incorrect ! I've reinstalled IE 6 SP1 and still no joy,
Any Ideas?

Hi Sean

I've managed to install the patch by extacting the
Q818506.exe into the same directory as the patch using
WinZip. I then ran the ieupdate.exe progarm (which is part
of patch)with the patch number from the start Windows
Start menu run box. The quotes are important.

"C:\TEMP\New Folder\ieupdate.exe" q818506

Check install before and after with the following
javascript from the IE address bar. It will show the monor
version details for IE.

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Hi Sean/Will,

This type of error is commonly seen when you are trying to install a patch
that updates a file that is outside the specified range.

Since this patch is a bit older there is a good chance that you had a more
recent patch already on your system, and may have inadvertently removed some
of the Security fixes that were previously in place. The latest Security
patch (Q832894) included the fix that Q818506 was addressing. You can
obtain that from Windows Update.
