Unable to browse network, but can ping the IP address

This PC is networked with 40 others, all using Win XP SP1.
Today when I tried to browse the network, windows came up with error:
"Unable to browse the network. The network is not present or not started"
I tried to use system restore, but it wasn't any help.

These are the Event Viewer log that maybe connected to the problem:
- The Workstation service terminated with service-specific error 2250 (0x8CA).
- Could not load RDR device driver.
- Could not load Rdbss device driver.
- The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: MRxSmb
- The Computer Browser service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service has returned a service-specific error code.
- The Alerter service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service has returned a service-specific error code.
- The Workstation service terminated with service-specific error 2250 (0x8CA).
- Failed to initialize DmServer service. The service is not running. Error: C000003A
- Failed to open event VxKernel2VoldEvent, Error=C000003A.
- DCOM got error "The dependency service or group failed to start. " attempting to start the service BITS with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097}

Can someone please point out if the error is related to hardware or software problem?
Thanks in advance for your kind help.

Regards,
Leonardo

Hi Leonardo,
This is obviously a complex issue. I have
performed some research on the log you included but can
find no information on most things in the log. I would
therefore suggest a basic approach or contacting
Microsoft Support. I would recommend deleting the LAN
connection and then running the network wizard again.
This might allow Windows to fix any corrupted net
services. When you open up one of the errors in the event
log there should be a link in the text box (you may have
to scroll down). Follow that support link which should
look like :
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
When you click this link the error will be sent to
Microsoft and more info will be given about the error.
Obviously the easiest thing to do if that fails would be
to re-install Windows XP as I suspect that this is a
software related issue. It may also be worth looking at
the event log for the last day that the workstation could
browse the network for. Look for application changes or
system changes. Hope this is some help, let me know if
you need further assistance, Luke.

“The dependency service or group failed to start. ” attempting to start the service BITS with arguments “” in order to run the server:
{4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097}
The server {E60687F7-01A1-40AA-86AC-DB1CBF673334} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

The fix is to change the “netsvcs” REG_MULTI_SZ in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost. You can save the following block of text as a .reg file and double-click it to import it (it’s for Windows 2000 only). Then restart the computer. All of the services that failed before should now work fine, and Windows Update should work again (and/or Dial-a-fix will finally be able to help).

Here is a link to the .reg for right-click-save purposes. (If you single-click on it and it looks funny, that’s because it’s Unicode).
