Unable to Access Some Web sites

I have a new Dell Insprion 600M that was granting access to all sites until
20 May. Subsequent to that date I have not been granted access to some gov
and mil web sites. Many other gov and Mil sites are accessible as well as
secure and non secure web sites. For example:

When trying to access "sandia.gov" I get "cannot find website" followed by"
this page cannot be displayed".

When trying to access "npc.navy.mil" I get "web site found-waiting for
reply" followed by "done" in the lower left corner. The page is blank,
followed by "cannot find the site" msg and a a redirection to an AOL site
that lists google links to this site.

When trying to access https://mail. sandia.gov I get a note that the "cannot
find server" followed by "this page cannot be displayed".

All sites were accessible and I made no intentional changes. I use AOL and
McAffee and noticed nothing unusual. I have reset my internet options on
IE6.0 to default, checked my firewall settings, done self checks on AOL using
their options, all to no avail.

Please help. Thanks

What you should do is, depending on your browser also, to type or copy the
complete address into the
address field of your browser. Www. followed by the following address at
least. Http:// was not arguably
absolute necessarily.

Than it could be, the server computer was out of reach for some reason also.

I have a similar issue, and have tried all of the steps in the document that
Satya suggested, no joy. Here is my problem, also a government site:

This is impacting both PCs on my account About a week or two ago, we stopped
being able to access a website (www.mcad-tx.org). I assumed it was ISP
related, but walked thru with SBC all the standard steps but no joy. They had
me download Mozilla Firefox, and I was able to reach the site. So no ISP or
PC issues, seems to be in IE. I am guessing it may be related to a recent
Windows Update. Any suggestions? You may try the Firefox idea to isolate the
problem to IE.

I'd sure like to know the solution.

Ray--I have done all the suggestions made by Satya with no luck. I also did a
system restore to about three weeks ago with no luck. My other home laptop
can access thes sites. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Three things to try if you can't get to some sites, but can get to others:

1. Clear your TIF and History completely:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

2. Check your Cookies folder and delete any cookies that relate to the
sites in question.

3. Check your C:\Windows\Hosts file as per this article:
Problems Using Internet Explorer with Incorrect Hosts File
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q219843

If no joy:
Problems displaying web pages (including secure sites)
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/16.html
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/17.html

If still no joy:

This may be caused by spyware/malware that's gotten installed on
your system. Use Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy to remove it.

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Good sites on how to install and use Spybot -
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html

Also download a winsock repair tool, to have just in case cleaning up
anything found breaks it -

Winsock repair tools:
LSPFix- all versions of Windows http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip
Winsock2 Fix- Win98, ME
http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-

More information here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.html
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ - runs a little script when loading page to
check for common parasites

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing
section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click
Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is
needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is
causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are
useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an
essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon -
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm - read all about BHOs.
Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow
down the culprit.

Or if you have IE 6 SP-2 you can do this within the browser:
How to manage Internet Explorer add-ons in Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;883256

If all the above fails, then the problem could be something new that the
spyware cleaners above don't have in their databases yet. In that case....
HijackThis direct download:

Then post it's output log to the forum here for analysis and feedback by the
parasite experts:

Or the other HijackThis Logs forums listed here:

Or try this program to get some of the most nasty malware:

Jon, that was a lot of stuff to try, but I did try them. Unfortunately, still
no luck with the one website. I will be traveling for a week and won't be
able to try more for a while. If you have other ideas, I am all ears.

I have the same issue for most users at my reservation centers, but as a
Domain Admin, I can get to the sites without any problems, go figure. These
users are power users.

I'm suddenly having a similar problem only worse -- NO web pages will load
("Cannot find server"). I can't even get to any page to start looking for
answers. All I've got left is e-mail and Usenet. Any ideas???

Tks,

Oh, @#$%! I've been reading through the other messages in this group and
found a fix involving Zone Alarm that also just worked for me with Norton
Anti-virus. Sorry, but glad I found it before anyone wasted time on this.
