Thanks for the info, Mark. Your comment on winmodem, IIRC, isn't this
a built-in unit on the motherboard? Mine is a separate card, needs
separate install.

I don't think it matters, BICBW. And you may have no difficulties at
all. I just wanted to prepare you for the most common hardware
incompatibility. If you can get all the brand, model #, serial # info, I
believe there are sites that will tell you if it's a Linux compatible
modem or not. Here, let's see... yup, looks like there are:

But attempting the impossible is more depressing than ignoring it.

Oh, well, Fred Langa says puppylinux is worth a shot...
Well, I d/led the puppylinux live CD iso, and it booted up and installed
and works like a dream...

....except it won't recognise a USB ADSL modem; the system finds it and
tells me all about it, but the distro only support ethernet modems,
whatever the hell they are.

I'm tempted to dig out my external 56k modem, but catch22 is that for me
B/Bis free (well prepaid), and dialup is charged on an 0845 number, and at
dialup rates it's gonna cost, specially linux style d/ls.

However puppylinux does look like a good starting point; it's about a 63
meg d/l, which is surprisingly conservative.

Guess I'll have to try mepis....distros, distros.....

Jumping in to broaden Mark's suggestion about knowing your modem. I
strongly recommend getting a printout of all your hw devices. Use
something like Belarc's advisor, whatever. More often than not you
won't refer to this.

But it's that one time that really saves your arse.

Good point, I wish W98SE in a screen freeze had a way to figure out what caused it in
a log file or something. After years of no problems with a dirty registry, now with a
clean registry I'm back to screen freezes.

Troubleshooting Windows STOP Errors (BSOD) and Freezes

The following issues are easily responsible for 99% of all system
instability issues, particularly with Windows:

· Bad or Flaky RAM
· High CPU/Case temperatures (Insufficient cooling)
· Bad Drivers (usually with el-cheapo hardware)
· Inadequate or Dirty Power
· Overclocking (some devices cannot run out of spec)
· Improper Permissions/Rights (results in Access Denied)
· Dirty Upgrade from Win9x/ME to 2000/XP
· Virus Infection (can result in a wide variety of problems)
· Incorrect jumper settings on your hard drive
· Improperly terminated drivers and controller
· Disabled or Misconfigured Services

SYMPTOMS OF COMMON ISSUES

· Bad Drivers ............ BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) or Spontaneous
Reboot
· Overheating ............ Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze
· Bad/Flaky RAM .......... Spontaneous Reboot or System Freeze or
Failed Install
· Dirty Power ............ Spontaneous Reboot or System Generated
Errors
· Inadequate Power ....... BSOD or Spontaneous Reboot or System
Freeze
· Overclocking ........... BSOD or Spontaneous Reboot or System

· Improper Permissions ... BSOD or System Generated Errors
· Dirty upgrade .......... BSOD or System Errors or Slowness or
Erratic Behavior
· Virus Infection ........ Inexplicable slowness or Highly Erratic
Behavior
· Wrong Drive Settings ... Inexplicable slowness or Failed Install or
Long Boot times
· Bad SCSI Termination ... Inexplicable slowness or Failed Install or
Long Boot times
· Disabled Services ...... Poor System Performance or Installation
Problems or Limited OS Functionality

Not quite. Gates dropped out in the mid-seventies.
Unix arrived around 1970.
And hardly anyone used it prior to the mid-eighties.
