You cant even update firefox... or rather you can but you have to search for
help
on the internet grasping for some nerds information

after googling somewhat I found a page on the wiki ubuntu site (seems that
they prefer to write wikis instead of making sure that the new firefox is
among the
update packages)

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FirefoxNewVersion

Read the page... and read it... and read it... GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

This page is endless! commands with the shell... lol all the reasons why
most people HATE and AVOID linux!

Installing- updating firefox on windows is just a double click!

I cannot understand how this terrible distro is number one on distrowatch,
while others like mandriva and suse that are far superior are further down!

LOL, so funny... he lasted more than I did.... I just ditched ubuntu, anyway
there will be a new version in a couple weeks.. perhaps then they will have
come to their senses..(not likley, but as you can see I really would like to
see them doing well).

If this guy who is comparibly computer literate is having problems then
what can you say about the children, elderly folk, or people with not very
good education? These ubuntu fanatics (I can name a few in these
newsgroups),
claim that ubuntu is easier than windows, and one even claimed that their
family members dont even notice a change when they switch from windows to
ubuntu....lol

Ubuntu means dork in african.

I too am playing around with Linux distro's & found the if I my
broadband modem/router is switched on during the install, it
automatically finds all the settings.

Not that I totally disagree, but it's somewhat unfair and unrealistic to
expect you can do everything you do in windows (getting transparency in
windows?? How many people do that? ) without having to struggle a bit
even if you are 'comparably' computer literate.

IMHO if you are the type that merely browses the net, download email, you
will find ubuntu sufficient.

But over here we are talking about people who love to download and play
with stuff, tweak their machines etc, obviously you can't expect
everything to work exactly like in windows (it's not windows after all!)
or for things to work as you expect. Not without a struggle anyway.

Let's face it all the new tricks you know about windows, didn't actually
appear overnight either , though it seems second nature now.

The ubuntu people who say it is easy do so, because they are used to it.
Similarly, windows is 'easy' to those of you who spend years using it. :)

I'm so glad to find you struggle with Linux, I thought it was just because
I'm mentally challenged I couldn't cope.

Actually Ubuntu is the only distro that's worked out of the box for me, ie
installed and ran (sloooowly), programs.

But I couldn't get on to the internet; and the fact of having to use
Windows to get to the websites you need to access to find out about linux
isn't inspiring.

And most depressing of all - why oh why isn't there just _one_ linux?
it's like trying to study *all* the Eastern philosophys at once!

But could you get to the internet with another distro, knoppix, puppy,
etc ?
usually hardware detection works well on old hardware, and knoppix or
kanotix have good hardware detection.

Puppy has a well done network wizard. Else, you should try to restart
the network services, for old mandrake distro the command was (as root)

# service network restart

Now, there is surely a command center in Ubuntu.

or maybe

# ifconfig -a will display something about network.

.... form a former linux user :)

unfair, and unrealistic?

I would expect a OS that is open source made by the people, would be the
easiest to handle. Ok, not all distros, but at least have ONE disto that is
childs play
and that you can update everything fast and easy. There is one distro like
that,
its linpire, but that one is not free.

Where is the love and the compassion of all the computer geeks to the
unprivliged of the world? Do they really care, or are they just satisfying
their
own shelfish geek needs? They want to make $100 laptops for all the children
in the third world.. and have linux on them. Windows is dumbed down, but it
is flexible too, I am afraid that in order to make linux simple they will
lock it
and make it inflexible...

As for your comments, I only asked to update firefox... no super
duper tricks and tweaks. I have been using linux for years, and I still had
trouble installing firefox on ubuntu. On mandriva you download a RPM
that self installs, on SuSe they make sure its among the auto updates.

My question stands. Why is Ubuntu ahead of Mandriva and Suse on distrowatch?

Did you know ubuntu is being backed up by a multimillionare? Is he pushing
it somehow?

Ubuntu means "something fishy" in African

I like to tweak more than you do. I talked about upgrading firefox, not
tweaking.

I however also like to tweak in a fast manner and see the results in a
little while,
for a reasonable cause. Not lose time to do even simple things.

I would say that with your logic you would have endless fun editing all the
code
directly in machine language (binary data).

Unbuntu means "time waster" in African.

OO-er, I didn't know that was there; it's the first time something like
that's happened - I theeeenk.

Looking at my sent folder, something appears to have attached itself; it's
the only one (out of a *lot* - time I cleaned up)

ISTR an unusual window on that follow-up; it's not on this one, I guess it
must have been a spastic click; (and I don't *use* IE)

Come on, don't tell me no linux user has ever done a spastic click ;)

Jmatt;

1 out of the 3 ubuntu 5.10 installs I've done and 1 out of 2 of the Suse
9.1 installs have failed to discover settings w/broadband modem/router
switched on.

But then, I'm sure Meat Plow has something to say about that too.

Ubuntu's pretty darned easy at initial setup. For me, the problem's
been relearning mount (& automount), nfs, samba, CUPS & the like. In
other words, the probs for me come in when I try to integrate it into
lans. But, that's true for Debian 3.1r1 and Suse 9.1 as well.

Btw, webmin looks very cool (http://www.webmin.com/). For those
checking out Linux, take a peek at webmin.

Same experience here. To continue my SimplyMEPIS pimping... v3.4-3
autoconfigures and automounts much, much more out-of-the-box. Most of
the above were a PITA for me to configure in Ubuntu; in SimplyMEPIS,
most were automagic.

The impending move to the Ubuntu packages and repositories should make
it easier for Warren to concentrate on continuing to make MEPIS special
in that regard.

I don't find the Mepis site very clear; is it payware?

Or can I d/l an iso and try it?

Ubuntu did at least go, and as I run a lean and mean version of windows I
can see how out of the box it's slow, but can be tweaked.

But getting on the net and being able to update and d/l specialist software

(if it exists - I use loadsa lovely freeware apps for assorted odd jobs) is
essential, and so far linux has always defeated me.

I use a standard ADSL modem, and I have an external modem that I bought
when I was trying very hard, but dialup is not an option for linux style
d/ls.

But I've wasted a lot of life and money on failed linux attempts, and I'm
not prepared to climb a learning mountain any more
