Two icons show up in system tray

I had two Microsoft Antispyware (MA) icons show up in the system tray so I
used Control panel to uninstall MA and then downloaded the latest version
from the MS website and installed it only to get two MA icons again in my
system tray. How do I get rid of what looks like a double install?

Hello Dick;

Do you have a keyboard with a fingerprint reader installed?

See Andre da Costa reply in thread " Multiple SpyWare icons on task bar " in
the microsoft.private.security.spyware.general forum dated 9/15/2005 as

Nope. I did a little experimenting and the problem seems to have gone away
by unchecking the "QuickTime\qttask.exe -atboottime" entry in the msconfig
startup list. Go figure. I'm also not sure that will be the final cure
because I seem to recall the 2nd icon disappearing before only to return.

Thanks for getting back to us with your success.
Nothing is more frustrating than supplying a fix and having the outcome just
go off into a bit bucket. This is a learning process for everyone here.

Good luck Dick

The two Microsoft Antispyware icons are back. I've turned the computer off
and rebooted several times but they seem to be here to stay. I had it
scheduled to run a scan this moring and when I got back to my desk there were
two identical dialog boxes onscreen informing my of the scan and the fact
that nothing was found. QuickTime qttask.exe is not running so that was not
the problem. In my Startup folder I have Microsoft Outlook 2000, WinFax Pro
10.03 by Symantec, Norton Antivirus 2006, Spybot Search & Destroy, a
clipboard utility called Yankee Clipper, and a time synchronizing utility
called WorldTime

I wonder whether what you are seeing is some form of icon cache corruption?
That was my first thought with your original post, but I gave up on a
response when I couldn't quickly find clear advice on how to fix this in
XP....

If you right click both icons, what options do you see--i.e. can you tell
what apps the two icons are really associate with?

Right clicking ether gets me to MSASW. Oddly. one of those showed security
agents status as disabled but the second showed it as enabled.

Something is wrong.

I'd recommend uninstalling Microsoft Antispyware, via add or remove
programs. Let's see whether that removes both icons. If it does, I'd
proceed as follows:

1) Uninstall (as I noted above)
2) delete the \program files\microsoft antispyware folder and all
subfolders. You will lose access to any quarantined items, history, and
customized settings.
3) then reinstall Microsoft Antispyware, taking care to use a download of
the current build, and to be logged in as the administrator user who will
customarily use the software.

If the initial uninstall does not remove both icons, check whether Microsoft
Antispyware is still listed in add or remove programs. If the icon remains,
but the uninstall isn't listed, we'll need to do some more work to fix this.

There is a function in TweakUi that will re-associate icons with startup
commands. This might be worth trying.

Also, how to get an icon to appear in the SysTray to begin with. V2005
seemed to work. V.2006 does not. I have searched the registry and can find no
evidence for there being a MinSysTray command associated with the software.

Before reinstalling, do a complete house-cleaning of the registry. I have,
over the years, found RegMechanic to be the only one to quickly do this. But
one must STILL do it by hand to do a final thorough job of it. THEN
REINSTALL. XP is a b..... to work with when installing new software. And,
shut off the cookie commands.
