The Spyware icon doesn't display in the system tray

D

Doug and Guara

Random Icons, now you see them, reboot then they are gone, reboot and there
back, run a program and then there gone... I am stumped, I don't know how to
explain it.

The Spyware icon doesn't display in the system tray.
--- Yes, there is a check in the display icon in the system tray. ---
Yet, I beleive the Spyware is on, as the schuled scans are running...
I must note that the sound Icon isn't there all of the time (Seems random),
I did the restore from Windows CD but it didn't fix the sound Icon in the
system tray. Although, I can control the sound through the Sound option in
the control panel.
I have searched microsoft.com for a week or more, and Reinstall Window by
accedently as
the support page http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=322205 , but in step 7.
I didn't get a chance
to Press "R" to start the automatic Repair Process, instead it just
Partitioned/formated and reinstalled Windows XP... So After I completed the
UPDATES, I have the same problem that I
started with a system only running system programs.

I have Norton, Norton Password, Windows Activate, Local Area Connection, MSN
Messenger, ZoneAlarm, and Intel Extreme Graphic icon in my system tray.
I also have a LinkSys BEFSR41 DSL Router

ALL --- Installed Programs
Intel Extreme Graphics Driver
LiveReg (Symatec Corporation) --- Norton SystemWorks 2004,Version: 7.02
Build: 211.
LiveUpdate 2.6 (Symatic Corporation)
Microsoft AntiSpyware
MSN Messenger 6.2
Norton SystemWorks 2004 (Symantec Corporation) --- Windows AntiVirus = OFF
Norton WMI Update
Sigma Tel AC97 Audio Drivers
Windows XP Service Pack 2 --- AutoUpdate = ON
ZoneAlarm Pro --- Windows Firewall = NOT MONITORED

Some --- Installed HardWare
HID UPS Battery --- APC BACKUPS LS 500 (American Power Conversion)
Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphic Controller
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.70GHz
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
Sigma Tel C-Major Audio

Yes, I have checked all windows file are "Signed"
Yes, I have msconfig each startup item to check for conflicts.

Yes, any information to make my system icons display properly would be
welcomed!

Many thanks

The "Hide the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the system tray" was
unchecked...
Thanks for your try.

I beleive this is a bug, not a setting.
As The programs that fail to load randomly are MSN messenger, MS AntiSpy,
and MS Sound.
If I was to guess it would be something to do with the drivers loaded for my
motherboard
(Intel®_Desktop_Board_D845GLAD)
Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (INF)
[INFINST_ENU.EXE]-infinst_enu.exe,
Integrated Graphics Driver [WIN2K_XP.EXE]-win2k_xp1410.exe,
Integrated Audio Driver [5.10.3686.CERTIFIED.EXE]-setup.exe
OR maybe my net card.
Realtek Semiconductor Corp - Networking - Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast
Ethernet NIC
But I am only guessing, and I don't know how to tell or how to corrected it.

My second guess would be MS autoUPdate updated a driver for my hardware as
My system worked fine, and between installing this MS antiSpy and
AutoUPdates
This problem started, but I can't forget NORTON UTITILITIES because if
a file is missing or currupt it searches and copies what it thinks to be the
right file
to the location sugguested in the registry.

Since all my systems files are signed, and autoupdates are complete, on a
mostly empty system...
I wouldn't know how to debug it as I am not sure what is causing this.

Many thanks in advance.

I'm surprised that you feel that reinstalling the Operating system will
somehow work around a bug in an application.

I think you are correct--and that the inconsistent icon is a bug in
Microsoft Antispyware. It's a bug--I don't have a workaround that will make
it consistent.

Oh, I forgot, I found this NEWSGROUP by accident,
and it has been the best resource in my opinon.
Is there a link this all the NEWSGROUPS topics, links and passwords all on
one page
or do I have to spend a year searching each topic, open, read, for each
topic.

Is there a faster way to add many Microsoft NEWSGROUPS?

Again Thanks

This problem started, but I can't forget NORTON UTITILITIES because if
a file is missing or currupt it searches and copies what it thinks to

to the location sugguested in the registry.

Since all my systems files are signed, and autoupdates are complete,

I wouldn't know how to debug it as I am not sure what is causing this.

Random Icons, now you see them, reboot then they are
gone, reboot and there
back, run a program and then there gone... I am stumped,
I don't know how to
explain it.

The Spyware icon doesn't display in the system tray.
--- Yes, there is a check in the display icon in the
system tray. ---
Yet, I beleive the Spyware is on, as the schuled scans
are running...
I must note that the sound Icon isn't there all of the
time (Seems random),
I did the restore from Windows CD but it didn't fix the
sound Icon in the
system tray. Although, I can control the sound through
the Sound option in
the control panel.
I have searched microsoft.com for a week or more, and
Reinstall Window by
accedently as
the support page http://support.microsoft.com/?
kbid=322205 , but in step 7.
I didn't get a chance
to Press "R" to start the automatic Repair Process,
instead it just
Partitioned/formated and reinstalled Windows XP... So
After I completed the
UPDATES, I have the same problem that I
started with a system only running system programs.

I have Norton, Norton Password, Windows Activate, Local
Area Connection, MSN
Messenger, ZoneAlarm, and Intel Extreme Graphic icon in
my system tray.
I also have a LinkSys BEFSR41 DSL Router

Conversion)
Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphic Controller

They are working to improve both the visibility and the ease of access to
these groups within newer versions of Microsoft software.

Currently, in the .509 version of Microsoft Antispyware, there is a direct
link to the HTML interface to these groups reachable by just clicking Help
in the program.

That first page of the HTML interface includes the information about how to
access the groups via NNTP.

A newer and much nicer HTML interface to a broad spectrum of newsgroups
supporting released Microsoft products can be found here:

http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx

I'm not impressed with the ease of finding information to access these
groups via NNTP at present--it isn't easy to find. Here's one page showing
how to do this--ignore the SMS specfiic stuff and just search on newsgroups
of interest to you once you've pulled in the list.

One site with fixes for a number of such annoyances is this one:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm

Here's another:

http://www.dougknox.com/

Because both of these sites may offer fixes that involve running a script on
your machine, you may need to turn off Microsoft Antispyware before running
the scripts, for correct operation. Scripts from these sites should be
safe, and effective at what they are desiggned to take care of--but some
care is advisable.

Both Doug Knox and Kelly Theriot have been recognized by Microsoft as MVP's
for their work supporting users:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/community/mvp/bios/knox.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/meetexperts/theriot.mspx

You can find out more about MVP's as a group here:
