Tidy up system tray

Rosie

When I use 'Hide inactive icons' in the system tray, I find that after a
reboot the icons I have hidden show again. What I am looking for then is
a utility that will allow me to permanently hide or show icons as I
want. I tried Tray Factory but that was no better. Can anyone recommend
something please?

Delete the icons you don't want.

I can't. The LAN icon doesn't have a a delete. I don't use the LAN
so there is no cable connected.

Then download one of the myriad tweak utilities available that allow
you to hide any desktop icons you desire.

Do you mean the network connection icon with the two little
monitors? If so, you can easily get rid of that by clicking on
Start, Settings, Control Panel and double click on Network
Connections. Then right click on the connection and click
Properties and look for something that says "Show icon in
notification area when connected" and uncheck it.

That is why I am posting, I'm asking for recommendations. I've tried
about 6 or 7 of these myriad tweak utilities and they either don't do
what I want or, in the case of Tray Devil, buggered up my system so I
couldn't start any program.

No, no, no. I did say the LAN icon. I _want_ the connection icon with
the 2 little monitors, I'm happy with that. Because I don't have a LAN
cable connected, this icon (which again, shows 2 little monitors but
with a dirty great red X across it, won't go away.

Hi Rosie,
this is a coincidence: I managed to get rid of that icon just yesterday.
I don't have a LAN, so I couldn't stand that icon in the system tray
anymore...
Go to the Network Connections window, highlight the LAN connection, and
then, on the left of the window, click on "Disable connection" or something
like that (in Italian is "Disabilita periferica di rete").

Ciao,

Got it! Thank you very much. :)

Other than the suggestions that others will make for good freeware that
does what you want, I suggest that you consider whether or not you
actually need so many icons in your system tray. Most, if not all of
them, represent some program running in the background. This may lead to
system instability (XP handles memory better than earlier versions
though). You might want to consider looking within the programs they
represent and see if there's some way to turn them off if you never use
them anyway.

Did you choice the "Always hide" for each individual icons?
You can change it from the mouse right click Tash Bar > Properties >
Customise (button).

Yes, and like I said, after a reboot, the icons I had 'hidden' showed up
again, hence my request.

I've been through all the program options but I am left with 2 or 3 that
I want to hide. When I tell Systray to hide them, they return after a
reboot. This is why I was asking for recommendations for a tray icon
manager that worked.

Hi,
You might try Kelly's Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 298, Left side.

It will fix numerous problems with the taskbar and notification area.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that messed up my system. It wouldn't get
right up to the completed desktop. Took about 2 hours to get it right!
Sigh.

Hi Rosie,

Try TrayWizard. I've been using it for years now, first on Win 2000, and
now on XP, and it works very well.

Main site is down, alternate download location :

Hi John. I had a look at this one but the page said it didn't support
XP. I should have said that's what I was using. Thanks anyway.

Sorry, I don't use XP so that slipped by. However, according to this link:

http://www.polk.edu/It/its/Training/Pdf/winxp.pdf

after you log in to XP several times, it "will automatically hide unused
Tray icons and replace them with a blue arrow that you can use to expand
the Tray to show all items."

OK John I'll have another look. Many thanks for the link. I'm using Trat
Wizard at the moment which seems to be behaving itself! Thanks Mario.

FWIW I used to have this problem (XP Home SP1). The systray icons went
haywire, sometimes after a re-boot, sometimes after using the system
restore. The problem seems to have disappeared since I installed SP2,
although I don't know why.

You might try "Hibernating" instead of re-booting. Look at Control Panel >
Power Options. Click the "Hibernate" and enable hibernation. Click the
"Advanced" tab and choose the options you prefer. Apart from other
considerations it saves time.

I use SP2 and that goes haywire! I did see on the MS site that there was
a problem with the system tray but I didn't find a solution.
I'm currently using PS Tray Factory but even that 'loses' the volume
icon when I reboot.

I do Hibernate (Fn+F12 does it for me) but I like to power off at times
to do a fresh boot..
