'Turn Off Computer' window takes 2 mins to appear

Hi all,

My Dad's PC has developed a strange problem and System Restore only fixes it
temporarily, then it creeps back.

When you click Start>Turn Off Computer, the hourglass cursor appears for
about 2-3 minutes delay, and finally the Turn Off Computer window appears
with the Log Off, Restart or Shut Down options.

NOTE: this isn't an issue with the actual shutdown process, so the usual
tips for that (corrupted sound file etc.) won't work.

Any ideas?

Something is hanging up. See these links:

As I said, it's not a shutdown problem therefore those solutions haven't
worked. It's a problem BEFORE I even choose to shut down, i.e. it's a
problem with getting the Shutdown option to even appear.

That is a shut down problem - depending on how you look at it. It's a
problem in not shutting down when you tell it to. Do the clean boot
troubleshooting to find what's hanging up.

Try this:

open a command prompt window

type net stop spooler

close the window

then see if your shutdown proceeds normally (more
quickly)

let us know what happens

But I haven't told it to Shut Down. The option doesn't even appear (for 2
mins).

What is running in the background, what is not closing in time? For
starters:

Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

shutting down and clears the Paging File on Exit.

Sorry guys but I don't think you're getting what I'm saying.

Kelly, you say "what is not closing in time?". However, if you click
Start>Turn Off Computer, *nothing* is supposed to close. All that should
happen is a window pop up where you can *then* choose to Log Off, Restart or
Shut Down.

I repeat, the problem is not with shutting down. The problem is I can't get
to the Shut Down option!

Does this make more sense?

Ok, I reread your post and see what you mean. Still the clean boot
troubleshooting might give you a direction. Yes it is boring but if you
do it by the principle of halves, disabling half at a time, it goes
pretty quickly.

same here

i have the same problem. its so hard to look for answers in the net.. recently this is the closest topic ive seen so far with the same problem as me.

Let me add some more details on this..

- the "Turn Off Computer" Window does not appear immediately upon clicking the "Turn Off Computer" button on the Start Menu. take 1-3 mins to do so

-This does not always happen (sometimes Turn Off computer window works and appears instantly), somehow the problem appears/activates only when the computer has been used for a couple of minutes or hours. (The problem is "activated" only when the computer is used for a while). The problem does not occur when you try to shutdown using the "Turn Off Computer" window only after a few minutes from a fresh booted windows.

-it takes a long time to see the "Turn off Computer" window, but when it does appear after SHUTDOWN PERFORMS PERFECTLY.

-so far the only solution to come around this problem is to set the Power button to shutdown, so as to avoid seeing the "Turn Off Computer" window

I have tried scanning for spywares and viruses long ago when i first encountered this but i cant remember any harmful one that might have caused it.

I have searched this problem before and found a number of sites of people also having this problem but dont remember that there was a remedy and i dont seem to find the sites anymore. I hope this problem doesnt lead to formatting my computer! =(

I hope more people will understand the problem more and give us some advice thanks in advance guys!
