Trouble comunicating between XP SP2 and win 2003

G

Guest

Background
- I have a new laptop with XP SP2 installed. All updates applied etc.
- I have a win 2003 server with all latest updates applied etc. It is our
print server.
- Both machines can talk to any other workstation on the network
Problem
- They cannot speak to each other.
- They cannot ping each other vie IP address or hostname.
- The XP workstation cannot connect to the server resources (i.e Printer
shares)
- When i use \\servername\sharename etc to connect it says that it cannot
find host on network. Although it works fine on other workstations or
servers.
- The print server cannot find the workstation either, same error message
What I have done
- Re-installed laptop three times
- I have isolated the problem to the ethernet card on the laptop.
- When i unplug the ethernet cable and turn the wifi on everything works
fine, both machines can talk to each other.
- I have checked the firewall settings on the print server, even turned it
off and reset it to default settings, no difference.
- I have checked the registry on the server for the host name of the laptop
and mac address (hoping to find it blocked somehow?) but nothing found.
- I have checked the DHCP server, WINS server and DNS server for any weird
things but everything is fine there as well.
- I have checked the event logs on both machines and no erros come up

How can I fix this?

Assuming firewall is not issue, what's the error code when using net view \\remotecomputerip? also posting the results of both ipconfig /all here may help.

Have you checked all IP networking information (is it using DHCP or are
you static addressing). If static, make sure all ip, netmask and
default gateway are correct. If the server is on a different subnet
then the default gateway is very important. Maybe your wireless is
receiving the correct IP information and your wired is not...

Hi there

Print server using static IP

laptop using DHCP for both ethernet and wifi.

All other use server as print server which is working 100%

Laptop has no problem using resources on our data server and user is using
mail fine and has full access to home folder etc.

By themselves both machines are functioning 100%, they just cannot
communicate with each other when it comes to accessing shared resources or
pinging each other.

Not being able to ping points to something (i. e. firewalls) blocking ICMP
packets. You should review the firewall settings.

Hi Jim

I have reviewed that.

Everying is fine.

Other machines can ping the two machines and visa versa, they just cannot
ping each other.

The system error 53 is connection or firewall issue. Do you have other security software running on these computers?

I have checked all the settings, nothing is being blocked.

I have turned off the firewall.

Thanks for the ideas so far. I will continue to tinker with it today.

if you have more ideas I would greatly appreciate them.

Thanks

Ok i can only isolate it to the mac address of the ethernet card. Could
windows be blocking that somehow?

If i turn the wifi on on the laptop is works fine and both machine can see
each other, so this excludes anything that has to do with hostnames, ip
address and firewall settings.

Does anyone have anymore ideas for me please.... I am stumped

Graeme,

An error 53 is inability to resolve address. Your ipconfig shows you using
Hybrid node type, with WINS (and maybe DNS) for local resolution.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html#Hybrid>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html#Hybrid

If you're using WINS, you need NetBT Enabled, consistently. The server is using
a fixed IP address. What is the NetBT setting on the server? Is NetBT Enabled
on the DHCP server 172.30.0.33?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/04/netbios-over-tcpip.html

Are you using DNS for name resolution too (instead)? For Windows 2002 (XP) and
2003, you need the name resolution clients (2002 and 2003) AND the DNS server
properly setup. This should be consistent.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-xp-on-nt-domain.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/windows-xp-on-nt-domain.html

Want to see how complicated name resolution can be? Read the Microsoft NT
Browser white paper. Look for "Microsoft TCP/IP and Name Resolution".
