TROUBLE AT WINDOWS UPDATE SITE. UPDATES WILL NOT INSTALL.

When I try to install Cumulative Security Update for
Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB867801) and Realtek
Semiconductor Corp. network software update released on
July 16 2004, the installations fail. No error number
appears, and I am given this message,

"No Updates Were Installed

The following items failed to install. To try installing
them again, click Review and install updates, and then
click Install Now again.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB867801)
Realtek Semiconductor Corp. network software update
released on July 16 2004."

I disabled my Norton Antivirus and my firewall and tried
again, with the same result.

I went to
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/#Other.

I tried:

Suggestion 1) My system does not seem to have this
directory or file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2
\edb.log ). I did a search for it, and I still can't find
it.

Suggestion 2) When I try to enter regsvr32 licdll.dll in
the "Run" area, I get a popup box with "RegSsvr32" at the
top heading, and the message "LoadLibrary (licdll.dll")
filed - The specified module could not be found."

Suggestion 3) I did this successfully.

Suggestion 4) I found WUTEMP here~~> C:\WUTemp. It
contained two folders, apparently empty,
entitled "com_microsoft.Q867801_IE6_SP1 and
PUBNAME.8668891 . I deleted the two empty file folders,
and I kept the WUTemp folder.

This always happens when I try to update.

I emailed the above info. to Microsoft's Online Assistant
at the update site.

The confirmation page showed up, and I saved it

You should be very wary of using winupdate for anything other than MS
specific updates, and NEVER for driver updates.
Use ONLY the hardware manu.site

1) a number of updates have been corrupt
e.g. Nvidea and Silicon Image drivers
2) The update will be a generic one for yr hardware chipset, as a result you
may lose functionality
e.g. many vid.card manu use a nvidea chipset but they often tweak the
drivers for their particular hardware as such the hardware manu.driver will
be different than the nvidea, direct, driver
3) Laptop drivers are often specific to the Laptop manu, not the hardware
chipset
