I live in Japan and very difficult to buy a new computer that has English XP.
I would llike to buy the new computer with the Japanese XP, reformat the hard
drive and instill Windows 2000 and then install my Upgrade XP Professional
that I bought in the states in Oct. of 2004. Thank you very much.

No need to install Windows 2000 first.

Use the Windows XP Upgrade CD. Boot with it - when it asks you which
partition you would like to install on - Delete the partition(s) and create
new one(s) the way you would like to have the system setup.. Continue the
install and it should ask you for qualifying media - at which time you can
insert your original Windows 2000 CD and let it approve the install and
continue following the given directions.

It would be very smart to have already downloaded Service Pack 2 (burned to
a CD) and all the specific drivers the laptop requires for Windows XP.

Do not connect the machine to the internet until you have SP2 installed and
your Firewall turned on.. It would be even better if you could get the rest
of the security updates installed first as well - not to mention an
AntiVirus application.. Then the first place you should visit on the web
would be http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.

Hello TheBFG,

I live in Nagoya City. Gee, I'm very glad to get in touch with you. I will
take a look at those websites and see what I can find. If you never had a
problem, that makes me feel good. Before I have always purchased IBM, but
this time, I thought I would see what else is around. The reason I need a new
machine is that I recently bought a Sony Video HDV camera and this machine I
am using just doesn't have enough RAM or fast enough CPU. I need at least
1GB of RAM and 3GB CPU, that's what they tell me anyway. I bought this IBM I
am using now in Sept. of 2001. I have been looking at Gateway and Dell, would
you by chance have any suggestions?
Thank you very much for responding.

Shenan Stanley,

My XP CD came with SP2 so that would take care of the SP2, wouldn't it?

I certainly appreciate your quick response and your detailed instructions.

Yes.. It would.
I would personally still remain disconnected from any way to get to the
internet until you have re-assured yourself that the Windows XP Firewall is
enabled.. But otherwise - you seem to be on-track!
