transferring dial-up numbers

Wally S

Running an IBM Thinkpad A30. I had Win 2000, and then I installed a new hard
drive, and my old hard drive is now an external drive. I installed XP on the
new drive, and I tried using the XP facility for transferring settings. It
spent hours collecting data and supposedly transferring data, but in the end
it transferred absolutely nothing. Now I would like to know how I can get my
dial-up numbers from my old disk and put them on the new one. Try as I may,
I cannot find where they are stored.

Thanks,

Wally

Hi,

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to these keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess\Profile
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\RemoteAccess\Addresses

Export each of these keys. You may wish to modify the second key before
saving to a .reg file.

Select Export Registry File from the File menu, and save this branch in
another file on your hard disk - this file will contain entries for all of
connections, so if you have more than one connection here, you must edit the
second Registry file manually with a text editor and remove the unwanted
entries.

At this point, you can merge the two registry files (using a text editor,
such as Notepad, and making sure the word "REGEDIT4" appears only once).

When you're finished, you should have a single Registry file (*.REG), on
which a user can simply double-click to add the connection to their system.

Hello,

Thanks for the quick answer. There is still one problem, however. Regedit
opens the registry on my current hard drive, but what I would need is to
open the registry on my former hard drive, which is now drive d:, connected
through a USB port.

Hi Wally,

This is the process you need to use. I have used it many times and it is
quick and safe. If you are needing any more help, please post back.

From an account with Administrator level access

1) Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT
2) In Regedit, highlight the HKEY_USERS key and go to File, Load Hive.
3) Use the File Open dialog to go to the Documents and Settings\<username>
folder, where <username> is the account you wish to modify.
4) Highlight the NTUSER.DAT file in this folder (usually a hidden file) and
select Open.
5) You'll be prompted to enter a "Key name". You can use whatever you wish,
but I use the User's logon name.
6) You can now expand the Hive you just loaded and make any needed changes.
7) When finished, highlight this Hive again and go to File, Unload Hive.

NOTE: You MUST unload the Hive prior to logging on to the users account.
Otherwise XP may have trouble loading the user's profile.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks again for a quick answer. As you said, it is quick and safe. I
haven't found the phone numbers yet, but I know which way to go. I thought
they would be in the old control panel under dial-up, but I cannot find the
old dial-up. Anyway, I guess I'll just have to keep searching. Even if I
don't find them, it won't be the end of the world.

Again, thanks a lot.

Most welcome, Wally. Have you tried connecting after importing the keys?
All of your info should be there. As for the physical dial-up numbers they
should be able to be found via the net rather quickly, if the before said
doesn't work fully. This is generally the least issue of most users.

If I still had dial-up here, I would do a quick search for the number I used
you to gain the location via the registry, but I don't. Good luck, Wally
and keep us posted.)
