Transfer of all files

R

Rich

I have one computer with Windows Vista (don't like it) and one computer with
XP - sp2. I want to transfer everything from the Vista to the XP. I bought
the USB Transfer Cable at Radio shack, but just like the Windows Easy
Transfer it don't seem to allow me to transfer from Vista to XP but it will
from XP to Vista.

I want to save everything to the XP computer, then go to the Vista computer
and get rid of Vista and install XP (I have the disk)

Any and all help is greatly apprecated

You might be beter off just backing up what you need manually (emails,
contacts, files you have created, favorites, pictures, music, etc.) by
copying to an external media of some sort.

Also - you say you have the Windows XP 'disk' - but do you have a license
you can utilize on the computer you are going to install upon? The Windows
Vista license does not (by default) allow you to install Windows XP on a PC.
You have to have a Windows XP CD and license that is unused (especially if
the CD is an OEM version - never used anywhere.)

Check with the manufacturer of the system and locate Windows XP drivers.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Thx for your reply, I do have the Windows XP disk with the license number. I am not that computer literate so please bear with me here. Seems to me that in a previous operating system I could go in and save to disk and when that disk got full it would stop and say insert another disk. But for some reason when I try to save to disk in Vista it will say file too large and I can not go any further. That is why I bought this USB Transfer Cable. They said, at Radio Shack, that I could move files either way ie; Vista to XP and XP to Vista. When I opened up the instruction booklet it don't seem to say I can go from Vista to XP. It worked on my other two computers, both with XP, I would get the window that showed both computers in one windopw and I could drag and drop files but, I don't see that feature here for Vista to XP. You said manually backing up to an external media of some sort, would that be one of those USB things? Also you said to check with the manufacture of the system
and locate windows XP drivers. What does that mean and how do I do it?

Thx once again,, Rich

If you have USB sticks, simply copy your data from the vista PC to the
stick, in IE. Dont try to copy applications, it wont work.

Assuming you purchased an OEM PC with Vista prinstalled, eg HP,Dell etc
simply visit their sites and go to the downloads/support section specific to
your model / tag number and check that winxp drivers are avilable. If they
are not, dont even try installing winxp

Don't even think about doing this before you ensure that you can get XP
drivers for *all* the hardware. If you can't get the drivers, you'll have
wiped the Vista install off and rendered the system completely unusable.
