Timing of "You've got mail" alert

I downloaded a "You've got mail" .WAV file. Then I set Win XP (via
Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Sounds) to play the .WAV
file whenever Outlook 2003 gets mail. But the timing is off. The
mail alert is played when Outlook finds the first email message. That
means I have to wait while message 2 through 50 downloads, and while
Outlook checks my other mailboxes. Meanwhile, I cannot use the Inbox
because the majority of the mail messages keep popping into the
message list momentarily before being redirected by my filters. I
prefer that Outlook wait until all mail-retrieval operations are
finished before playing the alert; that way I can do other things
while the mail retrieval is in progress and be reminded to switch to
Outlook when retrieval is finished.

How can I cause Outlook to play the email alert at the end of the
mail-retrieval process?

Another email program I have used (Forte's Agent) does wait until all
retrieval is finished before playing the alert.

I don't know of any way to force outlook to play it last - it always plays
the sounds as soon as it begins to download messages, not when its finished.
