Time synchronization 'The handle is invalid'

My PC fails when it tries to update its time over the internet. Can anyone
help?

I have a new XP, SP2 PC - Media edition 2005, completely up to date. It is a
home PC, connected to the internet over BT Broadband.

When I try to synch using the 'update now' button in Control panel I get 'An
error occurred getting the status of the last synchronization. The handle is
invalid.'

In the event log, I get a W32time warning 'The time provider 'NtpClient'
returned an error while updating its configuration. The error will be
ignored. The error was: The handle is invalid. (0x80070006)'.

I've tried updating from a number of time servers, including
time.windows.com, uk.pool.ntp.org, time.nist.gov . They all give the same
error.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Try setting the service up anew:

1. Start->Run-> cmd.exe
2. net stop w32time
3. w32tm.exe /unregister
4. w32tm.exe /register
5. net start w32time

Note spellings w32tm and w32time in different commands
Use all 5 steps regardless of any error messages

Oh, good suggestion. I'll try that when I'm home.

I had a go this morning, but it said I didn't have enough privilege to
unregister it. I guess I'll need to login as administrator - another little
task for me to find (I'm new to XP - it was so easy with 2000).

Many thanks again

The 'insufficient privilege' threw me as a start, as did the 'successfully
registered' the second time I used the /unregister tag. That said, the
problem is now resolved - many thanks.

this works fine, except the automatic update gets changed to every 7 days
instead of daily. now how do we do this with it updating automatically
everyday, since my internal clock is about 30 seconds fast per day? with a
media center, this time has to be accurate for tv guide to update.

You may have to adjust the period between polls. Have a look
here at the various parameters of the time service:
