.tif files won't open

I have patient files that I backed up onto a cd. I tried to open the files
on my home computer and couldn't. I drove 3 hours, backed up the files
again, made sure they were okay, came home and tried to open the files... and
can't.
I originally used Microsoft Office Document Imaginng when I scanned the
paper files and at home, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. When using the web
to select a program, Microsoft identified the files as .tif and listed
pic/fax viewer and Paint as applications that would work. They didn't.
I would greatly appreciate any/all help.
I'm about ready to panic. Actually, I already have.

don't know what you mean "backuped onto cd"/

did you use a back up software or just copy
files over to cd.

did you copy backup files over to cd
or were they regular files?

Tif's come in 2 formats
compressed and uncompressed, how
were they original produced on the other computer?

What is a typical filename
that you can type here of one of those files, kb size/

If you haven't already guessed, I'm not computer literate. It was easier to
answer you questions 1 at a time.
don't know what you mean "backuped onto cd"/
....I copied the files by burning a cd with the software that came with my
computer 'Sonic Record Now'
did you use a back up software or just copy
files over to cd.
....Just copied
did you copy backup files over to cd or were they regular files? ....Regular

Tif's come in 2 formats
compressed and uncompressed, how were they original produced on the other computer? ....Uncompressed

What is a typical filename that you can type here of one of those files, kb size/
.... Under properties is:TIF Image. I transferred folders of scanned
documents. The CR-R holds 700mb, none of the folders exceeded 500mb total
Thank you in advance for your help.

So I don't make the same mistake twice; why wouldn't a Microsoft program
(paint/fax viewer) open a file that was scanned using a Mircosoft imaging
program?

I'll try the download.
: ) Thank you!

ok,
but open my computer to any one of those files
then type a filename, then type here the file type noted, then type me a
file size/kb

(keep this file in a handy place so we can synchronize some steps to help
with it.
i suggest simply putting a copy of it into my documents until the issue can
be solved, ok?)

The association is screwed up.

Windows security getting in the way?? Not sure whether this applies to all
types of file but its worth a look.

Right click on a file. Then properties and general tab. Is there a Security
heading at the bottom?? If so click on Unblock and apply.

)

I checked- it's not blocked.

IT WORKED! But you knew that. Are there any other applications that will
open the files? My concern is that this has never been a problem. In the
future how can I avoid problems opening files stored on a CD-R? What program
would you recommend I use when scanning (the handwritten) files?
Thank you again,
BG

Great, glad that got you going. As to your other questions I can't really
give you any advice. I haven't worked much with scanning and the graphical
output from it.

I hope this is the correct info-
File type: TIF Image
File size: 11,789 kb

FYI-
Initially, when I couldn't open the file I did the following:
-Right clicked the icon
-'open with'
-'choose program'
-'look for the appropriate program on the web'
Microsoft listed Paint. When I tried to open with Paint the following error
messages appeared:
"Paint cannot read this file"
"This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported"
I was able to open the files with Irfan, but the resolution is poor and for
my needs, the format makes it difficult to work with.
Thank you- BG

try opening the application first 'win pix and fax viewer', then open the
file w/in that app. the exact same thing happened to me over the w/e and
this worked for me...
