Ok here is a tricky one

Vista SP1, IE7, Office Basic 2007

Trying to launch IE from hyperlinks from OUTLOOK, WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT
gives me the error message "this operation has been canceled due to
restrictions on this computer".

This is not limited to hyperlinks in the body of emails, documents or
spreadsheets or slides. It also extends to things like “check for updatesâ€,
“contact us†and “go online†from the “help†menu and â€resources†options.

Interestingly clicking “contact us†gives the error message but then opens
up a pop up window (not an IE window) which has a hyperlink in it (to
manufacturer support contacts) and clicking that hyperlink does open an IE
window.

Another interesting thing is that I can launch IE from a PowerPoint slide
once the slide show is activated.

I can also launch IE from non-office applications such as Norton, Adobe, etc.

IE7 is the default browser. I have no other browser installed.

I have already "reset internet explorer settings" and disabled "third party
browser extentions".

I am not aware of installing any software restriction policy.

I have the latest Norton Internet Security and Protection Centre and up to
date definitions and Windows Defender is also up to date.

UAC is off.

I tried recovering to an old restore point which did not work (maybe because
my restore points didn't go back far enough).

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command] has the
value "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe\" –nohome

I have already exhausted efforts by the Vista Security team (Jesper) without
success.

Any suggestions.

Thanks for your reply Diane.

As mentioned below in my first email I have already tried the things in that
link. I tried them again just now (resetting settings, importing registry
key, etc) to double check and still no luck.

I agree it is not a problem with office but I would also suggest it is not a
problem with IE. And I don’t believe it is a problem with security.

I do believe it is a problem with the interface between Office, Windows and
IE. Searching the net reveals the error message also seems to appear for many
varied problems. There is a really good description of the sorts of things
that can cause this error message in the KB article 279713. After reading
that article just now I realised that there is almost no chance of fixing my
problem.

Do you have any suggestions or should I just look on the bright side and put
up with it.
